Hawaii's State Bird this nene goose was resting near the Halemau'u Trailhead parking lot.

Camouflaged Nene Geese

A group of Nene Geese that blend with the plants and brush we encountered during a hike inside Haleakala Crater. We almost didn't see them until we walked (along the trail) to within a few feet of them.

Kalahaku Overlook Sunrise

Normally we would have viewed the sunrise from either the Haleakala Visitor Center or Summit but a ranger directing traffic turned us away due to a full parking lot. So we ended up at the Kalahaku Overlook (9324 ft/2842 m) which ended up turning out fine. It wasn't as crowded and maybe it wasn't as cold -- but it was still quite chilly.
